The levels at which we see things has always been an obsession of mine. As something
captures your eye, you are ‘drawn in’ and then you’re captivated by the details
that make up the object or thing. That is what I try to capture in my art.
Whether it is a scratch on an old tool, a dent or a ding or the bristly hairs
of an animal, I find it fascinating that all these elements add up to a thing of
beauty. How light falls on it and defines the overall object is nothing short of
miraculous. Within that ‘close up realm’, the little details show a warmth and familiarity
that is very appealing and a challenge to capture in a project.
I like to find one or a combination of the three things that I am attracted to most,
which are: contrast, hypocrisy and contradiction. This seems possible only when
I really study the subject matter. And best of all, perhaps catching that lyrical
or humourous aspect of a subject matter which I find hugely rewarding. You can probably
tell I like old tools from flea markets or an antique shop, a good county fair -
smell that fried food - and just about anything mechanical! And yes, the
older the better. Please enjoy.
